Your Guide to First Thursdays in Cape Town
If you’re in Cape Town on the first Thursday of the month, you’re in for a treat. First Thursdays is a vibrant celebration of South Africa’s art and culture, where the city’s streets come alive with creativity, music, and buzzing nightlife. We definitely recommend coming into the city if your trip aligns.
What is First Thursdays?
On the first Thursday of every month, many of Cape Town’s art galleries, restaurants, bars, and shops stay open late, transforming parts of the city into a lively hub of creativity and culture. Galleries and shops will host DJs, pop-ups and exhibitions across the city.
Originally designed to make art and cultural spaces more accessible to the public, it has since evolved into a must-do social event, drawing both locals and visitors alike.
Art galleries are open from 5-8 pm and the bars and restaurants will take the party on later into the night.
Where to Go & What to Expect
There are three main areas where First Thursdays operate:
Central City
Church Square
De Waterkant
We spent our evening around Bree Street, Church Street, and Loop Street, where you’ll find an eclectic mix of art exhibitions, live music and pop-up bars. Many galleries offer free entry and complimentary drinks, so you can sip a glass of wine while admiring local and international art.
Bars and restaurants fill up fast, so booking a table in advance is a good idea. If you don’t have a reservation, pop-up food stalls and mobile bars line the streets, serving everything from craft cocktails to street eats (we saw samosas and shawarmas).
As the night progresses, expect DJs, dancing, and a buzzing atmosphere as the event blends into Cape Town’s nightlife scene. The main area for drinking is on and around Shortmarket Street.

Our Experience of First Thursdays in Cape Town
We spent the evening exploring the galleries near Bree Street, hopping between exhibitions and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. With DJs setting the tone and people spilling onto the pavements, it felt more like a street party than a gallery night. Between the art, live music, and great drinks, it’s easy to see why First Thursdays is such a highlight on Cape Town’s cultural calendar.
