The Best Pastries in Oaxaca City

What goes better with your morning coffee than a lovely bread or flaky pastry? If, like us, you’re partial to a pastry to start your day, then we have a list of our favourite spots in Oaxaca City. While Mexico might not be the first place you think of for pastries, there’s no doubt that Oaxaca is producing some top-notch baked goods.

Bodaega

With its striking blue exterior on a quiet street, this bakery nails both coffee and pastries, making it the perfect place to start your morning. The shop has one long shared table for enjoying those flaky bites, so do bare in mind seating is limited. We also love that you can see the bakers in action.

Tierra del Sol

A truly beautiful setting, where you won’t just find pastries but also traditional Oaxacan food and drinks being made—like tortillas on the comal or atole, a hot masa-based drink. Whether you come for the pastries or just to have a look around, make sure you visit. Tierra del Sol is featured in Michelin 2024.

Others on Our Shortlist (but We Didn't Get to Taste)

Despite being in Oaxaca multiple times over six weeks, we couldn’t get to every café on our list. Here are a couple more that caught our eye, even though we didn’t manage to taste test:

  • Boulenc Pan y Café - Artisanal bakery - Instagram

  • Marito & Moglie Café - Okay, it might not be a bakery, but it does do cake & pastries. It’s, in fact, a small roastery and café in the heart of Oaxaca City. Enjoy their coffee and pastries on their patio. Instagram

Whether you’re an avid pastry lover or just looking for a good spot to enjoy a fresh-baked treat with your morning coffee, Oaxaca City has plenty to offer. From charming bakeries hidden behind colourful facades to places showcasing traditional Oaxacan baking techniques, these spots are well worth a visit.
