Let's kick things off by celebrating a woman who has excelled in her field – Helen Evans, the creative force and baker behind Eric's bakehouse in East Dulwich.

Having just moved to the area, Eric's was the first place I had my sights on. There's something special about a pastry run, especially when the air is as crisp and the skies as blue as they were today. Yes, today was THE day I finally got to experience Helen’s own bakery. Despite it being a Friday, the queue was already 20 people deep when I arrived at opening time (8 am Friday and 9 am Saturday). But let me tell you, the aroma of those delectable bakes filled the air as I waited in line, and I couldn't wait to indulge after reading what was on the menu on their outdoor chalkboard menu.

Eric's is nestled on a corner of East Dulwich in an inviting yellow building. It owes its success to Helen's expertise and dedication to baking. With experience gained from top bakeries worldwide, including Flor in SE London, Helen's journey to owning her own bakery is a testament to hard work and determination. Honing her skills in the field where she draws passion.

Since its launch in Easter 2023, Eric's has been a sensation, as evidenced by the weekly queues snaking out the door. And let me tell you, every bite of those flaky flavored scrolls, soft cinnamon buns, and that heavenly sourdough is a testament to Helen's skill. Oh, and let's not forget the irresistible hot cross buns – there's no way I'm saying no to those while they're ‘in season’.

Do note, Eric’s is only open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays, so be sure to take a stroll over to her bakery if this is your neighbourhood or why not, head over to Dulwich and explore the area with a pastry in hand.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it's important to take a moment to recognise the incredible women we’re surrounded by, like Helen today and every day, making waves in their respective fields.
