Saunders’ Rocks Beach: Tidal Pools, Sun, and a Refreshing Cold Plunge
If you’re looking for a chilled-out spot to soak up the sun and experience one of Cape Town’s famous tidal pools, Saunders’ Rocks Beach is a great destination, particularly during your stay in Seapoint or Greenpoint.
Located near where we stayed in Cape Town, this little gem offers small sandy shores, mammoth granite boulders for bathing, and a relaxed vibe that’s hard to beat, with a stunning view of Lion’s Head in the background. It’s also a popular spot for picnics and stunning sunset views.

A Morning Run with a Refreshing Finish
One of our favourite experiences at Saunders’ Rocks Beach was combining fitness with a refreshing plunge. We set off on a 5km run early in the morning—at 8 am, the sun was already blazing—and tagged our route with a visit to the tidal pool. Nothing beats diving into its icy waters after a sweaty run. Be warned: it’s cold … and we mean really cold, but on a hot summer’s day, it’s the ultimate way to cool off.
The Tidal Pool and More
Cape Town is known for its tidal pools, and Saunders’ Rocks Beach is home to one of the best. These pools, carved into the natural landscape, offer safe, enclosed spaces for swimming while being refreshed by the ocean’s waves. The water here is crisp and invigorating, perfect for a dip on a sweltering day whilst you watch the sea breaking on the shore adjacent.
Once you’ve braved the plunge, head to the standing wall, which absorbs heat throughout the day. In the late afternoon, when the sun is less intense, leaning against the wall is the best way to warm up after your swim.
What to know before you go
Saunders Rock Beach isn’t just about the tidal pool. The sandy beach is great for sunbathing, and the boulders provide plenty of spots for lounging or bathing. A word of caution: the sand has a lot of broken shells, so walking in flip-flops or sandals will make for a more comfortable experience.
The beach is well-maintained with clear rules—no dogs or alcohol are allowed, which helps preserve its laid-back, family-friendly atmosphere. And with the iconic Lion’s Head towering in the distance, the views are as good as the vibes.
