The Best Coffee Shops in Bermondsey
Bermondsey Street is one of London’s most charming areas, lined with independent shops, vibrant restaurants, and some great coffee spots.
Living here for a number of years certainly had it’s perks!
Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this lively street offers a perfect blend of character and quality and is just a stones throw away from Borough Market. From artisan pastries to coffee cocktails, here are four must-visit coffee shops that capture the essence of Bermondsey Street.
Watchouse Coffee
Comptoir Gourmand
Frequency (in Bermonds Lock)
Fuckoffee
Chapter 72
Crol & Co
WatchHouse Coffee
One of our favourite coffee stops in London
At the top of Bermondsey Street, you’ll find the original WatchHouse Coffee, a cosy gem well worth the stroll. Its name comes from its unique location—an old watchhouse, historically used as a shelter for men guarding the neighbouring graveyard of St Mary Magdalen’s Church. Today, it’s renowned for crafting some of the best coffee in London and has even expanded internationally with a location in New York.
This charming café is compact, just 25 square metres in size, with about five small tables inside and a few outdoor seats for sunny days. During winter, the warm glow of the log burner makes it particularly inviting. What sets WatchHouse apart is their attention to detail; every coffee is thoughtfully served with a card explaining its origin and flavour notes—a personal touch we love.
Choose from a rich flat white or a carefully brewed pour-over, both made with beans roasted at their nearby roastery on Maltby Street, which becomes a bustling market at weekends. You’ll also find a small selection of baked goods, including pastries and sandwiches, to pair with your coffee.
If you’re a pastry lover, Comptoir Gourmand is a must-visit—but did you know they also serve excellent coffee? They use the renowned Monmouth Coffee beans who have their own coffee shop just a 10-minute walk away at Borough Market.
What pairs better with coffee than a flaky, buttery pastry? It’s the perfect spot to grab a sweet treat and a freshly brewed coffee to kick-start your morning as you wander down Bermondsey Street.
Open:
Monday - Friday: 8am - 5pm
Sunday: 9am - 4pm
Frequency Coffee
Frequency is a small coffee bar on the ground floor of Bermonds Lock, a modern, stylish apartment hotel on Tower Bridge Road. The coffee is good, and the lobby makes for an excellent workspace! A lot of Hungry Soles’ content has been created whilst working from here. (the coffee shop used to be called Shaman).
Just be cautious that the co-working space gets very busy, but if you hang around, space will usually become available. There is a mix of big tables, beanbags and window stools, and the vibe is excellent.
