Visit a Cider House

A visit to a traditional cider house, or sagardotegi, is a must when in San Sebastián. Nestled in the green hills surrounding the city, these rustic establishments offer a unique Basque experience centred around the region’s beloved apple cider. The ritual begins with a shout of "Txotx!" as a massive wooden barrel is tapped, releasing a stream of freshly fermented cider into waiting glasses. It’s all about catching the cider mid-flow and savouring it straight from the source.

The atmosphere in a cider house is lively and communal, with long wooden tables where strangers become friends over hearty, traditional fare. The menu is simple but satisfying, typically featuring salt cod omelette, grilled T-bone steak, and local cheeses, all designed to pair perfectly with the tangy, crisp cider.
