The Tamil Prince - Islington, London

Our Rating: ★★ | ££ - Great meal but is it worth the hype?

When it comes to South Asian cuisine, our standards are very very high (thanks Ammi). Combine that with the fact that to get a table at The Tamil Prince, you need to reserve your spot 4 weeks in advance at 10 am, our expectations for this meal were extremely high.

Did it hit the spot though?

It’s a small restaurant with a small menu which sounded enticing enough for us to order the entire thing apart from the 2 more expensive mains.

Everything tasted amazing, the only dish I would say was below par with what I would expect is the viral Channa Bhatura, the chickpeas lacked the spice that I am used to but everything else was on the money, especially the rotis and rice. It’s good to see an Asian restaurant get those small details right.

The menu is designed to be shared (which seems to be the thing everywhere in London now), but everything was portioned out appropriately to be split between 4 people which is great to experience. No awkward slicing of bhajis is needed. Also, at £55 per head with 1 drink each and a bottle of wine it’s great value for money.

Would we go back to the Tamil Prince? Absolutely!

Is it worth the hype enough where you have to make reservations as if you’re applying to Glastonbury, maybe not. But it wouldn’t stop me from doing it again.
