A City Revitalized: Clean Waters and Open Arms

Over the past few decades, Copenhagen has invested heavily in cleaning up its harbour and waterways. What was once industrial and polluted is now a haven for swimmers. The city's commitment to environmental sustainability and public health has transformed it into a premier destination for urban swimming.

To help swimmers navigate the best spots, the KBH Havn app (available here) provides an official guide to legal swimming locations, water quality updates, and safety information.

Essential Tips for Swimmers

  • Prepare for the Cold: Danish waters can be chilly, even in the summer months. Bring a towel, and consider packing a warm drink in a flask to enjoy after your swim.

  • Safety First: Always swim in designated areas and be mindful of local guidelines. You don’t want to end up in the way of one of the canal boats.

Kalvebod Bølge

Located along the waterfront, on the other side of the water to Islands Brygge Harbour Bath, Kalvebod Bølge offers a more chilled-out experience. This is where we spent most of our time swimming, as it was 5 minutes on the bike from our hotel.

Before you dive in, grab a coffee from the cart on the road leading up to the bathing area. Modern design and the serene harbour make it a local favourite.

Just be aware that it’s on the wrong side of the water for sunshine in the evening, so it gets cold quickly!

This intimate spot boasts a 16-seat farm-to-table restaurant, where the emphasis is on fresh, locally sourced ingredients crafted into delightful dishes. You can indulge in excellent coffee, a curated selection of wines, and delicious food, all of which can be enjoyed outdoors to soak in the picturesque surroundings.

One of La Banchina's standout features is its sauna—an authentic Danish experience that adds a special touch to any visit. Be sure to book ahead, as the sauna is very popular.
